Sama Investments, a Birmingham-based residential developer and investor, has submitted plans (represented as applicant Garrison Group Holdings Ltd) to deliver a flagship residential scheme, known as Garrison Circus in Bordesley Green, on a prominent brownfield site. This includes a landmark tower of up to 37-storeys — which will provide a focal point for the area — on the corner of Great Barr Street and Watery Lane Middleway.
The plans, which will unlock a new gateway into Digbeth and Birmingham City Centre, will see the delivery of over 500 new homes and 650 student rooms across four blocks. The proposals will deliver much-needed new homes and support the vibrancy of nearby universities, with Aston and Birmingham City University only a short walk away.
The proposals will deliver a dynamic variety of amenities, creating interest and activity at street level. This could include dedicated space to support the local arts industry, creating a link to Digbeth’s strengths as a centre for culture and creativity, as well as shops and other uses.
New outdoor courtyards and public open spaces will also be delivered, creating an attractive new space for the whole community. As part of the transformation the locally listed Myona building, which has historic links to Jacobs Biscuits, will be retained and restored.
Paul Casola, Lead Project Manager at Sama Investments, said: “Garrison Circus is a fantastic opportunity to unlock a new gateway into Digbeth, whilst also supporting the wider regeneration of the area. Digbeth will be at the heart of Birmingham’s ongoing transformation and a hub of culture and creativity.
“Our proposals will bring a derelict brownfield site back into productive use, whilst retaining and enhancing a local heritage asset. Not only will we deliver vital new homes and student accommodation, but the plans also include street-level community uses, and green space for existing residents in the area.
“We look forward to working with our partners at Birmingham City Council to bring the planning application forward over the coming months.”
